Brief Description:

Presently located in Salem Tabri, on the outskirts of Ludhiana (Punjab) – India on NH1. Gurudwara Gursagar is among the few leading Gurudwaras in this metropolitan city. After the partition of the country in 1947, majority of the population settled here had migrated from West Punjab, now in Pakistan. For the first 12-15 years, a local Gurudwara was installed in a Mosque vacated by the Muslims during partition of the country. The population of the whole locality at that time was hardly 300 and this small Gurudwara was catering well to serve the socio-religious needs of the area.

It took more than a decade for the migratory population to establish themselves financially. By 1960, there was some increase in population and with the result of that the Mosque’s place looked small to cater to the needs of the population. Here, it will be quite relevant to mention the names of few leading figures who we can list as the founding pillars of this religious place. Noble souls, as they were, they had strong religious bent of mind and had a clean image in the public life. The prominent names are:

  • S. Sujan Singh
  • S. Dhian Singh
  • S. Kartar Singh
  • S. Sardar Singh
  • S. Daya Singh
  • S. Inder Singh

All of these families came from West Punjab (Pakistan) and settled here as agriculturists. After a few years i.e. around 1950-51, a noble soul by the name of S. Karam Singh got associated with this small Gurudwara. He was selflessly involved in observing religious code of conduct in the form of Nitname and Kirtan for more than 15 years at a stretch. His dedication helped in linking hundreds of devotees to this Gurudwara. Rightly, this saintly man was chosen to lay the 1st brick of the new complex started in the early sixties.

With the blessing of the Almighty, S. Kartar Singh donated 1500 sq. yards of land for constructing the new Gurudwara. Others also contributed from time to time and the present beautiful complex – with a total area of approximately 4000 sq. yards has come up today.

Gurudwara’s name and its history:

Before coming to Ludhiana, the prominent figures named above were residents of Chak 78 (North), District Sargodha (Pakistan). Basically all of them were well established agriculturists. There, they came in contact with a saintly person known by the name of Sant Diwan Singh, whose motivation led to construct a beautiful Gurudwara on the bank of a canal. The opening day happened to be Sangrand of Magh (as per local calendar) i.e. January 14th.The district headquarters of Sargodha being close by, there was a huge congregation on the opening day.  The Hukamnama from Sri Guru Granth Sahib was:

DnwsrI mhlw 1 Gru 2 AstpdIAw (pMnw 685)
< siqgur pRswid]
guru swgru rqnI BrpUry ] AimMRq sMq cuigh nhI dUry]

Instantly it was suggested by Sant Ji that the Gurudwara be named as ‘Gursagar’ i.e. the first word of the Hukamnama. The name was very appropriate – as the word means ‘Ocean of Knowledge’ – i.e. a place of worship having unlimited ‘Gyan’ or Guru’s Teachings. It was in this context that the present Gurudwara was also named Gurudwara Gursagar.

Activities at Gurudwara Gursagar:

There is hardly any need to mention that all religious functions (Gurpurabs) and other social functions are held with great fervour.  But the real test of such institutions lies in other related social activities which benefit the whole society. Some of the important social activities undertaken are:

  • Computer training centre – Both short and long term courses are being conducted successfully, especially for girls. This centre is very popular and girls from far off areas register themselves for these courses which later help them in securing computer based jobs. The Gurudwara management is thankful to Nishkam Seva Samiti with whose collaboration it is being run.
  • Library – A women college near the area opened an extension library in the Gurudwara which is of great help to the students.
  • Stitching & embroidery centre – Nishkam Sewa Samiti is conducting this course for girls and women of the surrounding area.
  • Anganwari – The Gurudwara has been accommodating an Anganwari where pre-school kids from low income families are looked after and provided with free mid-day meal.
  • Primary School – A primary school for low income families was started in early seventies on a piece of land donated by late S. Kartar Singh. To get more grants/funds from the government for its better future, the school was recently pledged to State Education Department by the Gurudwara management.
  • Charitable hospital and clinical laboratory – In the beginning, medical facilities for common man were started by opening a Homeopathy unit. The results were encouraging and on the demand of public the management extended the medical services by including general medicine wing and a dental unit. An X-ray machine was also added to it later on. More facilities like eye checkup and gynae unit are also proposed to be added very shortly. All medical services are being provided at subsidised rates. A full-fledged testing lab, covering all parameters of blood, urine, stool, lipid profile, liver function test etc. are being carried out with latest machines on very concessional rates. This is quite helpful in diagnosing the diseases properly leading to better treatment.
  • The Sikh Martial Art Gatka – In the evening, many young children – both boys and girls are welcome to undergo Gatka training. This helps in bettering physical fitness and self-defense. This is the best way to channelize the youth energy for the benefit of society.

Further expansion of the Gurudwara and its activities are going on and it’s an ongoing process.
